Origin of Material
The Merensky Reef underground sample material was supplied by Two Rivers Platinum (Pty) Ltd that is located in the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld complex.
Approximate Mineral and Chemical Composition
The minerals of interest include PGE-Sulphides, PGE-Asernides, PGE-Tellurides and PGE-Alloys. The silicate rocks consists of (predominantly) orthopyroxene and Plagioclase with minor constituents of diopside, biotite, serpentine and talk. Base metal sulphides such as nickel, Copper and Cobalt do occur in ppm concentrations. Elevated PGE values are found around 2 chromitite stringers with 2-5% sulfide mineralization in the upper and lower portion of the Merensky Reef. The sulfide mineralization is predominantly pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrite.
