Origin of Material
Underground chip samples of Basal Reef (Witwatersrand Basin).
Approximate Mineral and Chemical Composition
Basal Reef – Two main facies have been identified, the Black Chert Facies (BCF) and the Loraine Facies (LF), where current mining only takes place in the BCF. Black Chert Facies comprises of multiple stacked, small pebble conglomerate bands. Black chert pebbles make up 25% of the rock. The gold occurs in the matrix and tends to be concentrated in carbon seams along the bottom contact of the reef band.
